No Job, No Direction, No Ambition, No Life.

I'm out of school and out of work, and I have no plans for my future. I'm living off my parents, who basically ignore me because they no longer know how to deal with me.

When I passed an elite high school exam years ago I was their pride and joy. Now I am a disgrace to them and they are ashamed of me. Most people identify and make judgments about others based on the school they attended or the company they work for. So I have become a nothing to the rest of the world and the shame of my family since dropping out of school.

I believe in myself despite my situation and I hate my parents who can't see any value in me. I think I should get out of this house and make my own living, but I don't know what I can do or even what I want to do. I know it will be hard for me to find a job.

To be honest, I'm afraid to get out on my own and not sure whether I can get along with strangers, but I'm also afraid of what will become of me if I stay in this situation and go on hating my family and the rest of the world. I don't know what to do. Maybe I'm not desperate enough yet, or I'm lacking in motivation or self-confidence. How can I make a new start in life?

You're in a difficult situation and I agree that you should get out on your own as soon as you can. As long as you continue to live at home though, I think you should be a little easier on your parents. You say you hate them because they see no value in you. I can understand why you feel that way and your resentment is not unnatural nor entirely unjustified.

But you're faulting them for not understanding you, while you make little or no effort to understand them. They see life differently than you do. They are only human and you can't expect perfection from them. They gave you life and they continue to feed you and put a roof over your head. They can see that your life is going nowhere and they are probably aware of the antipathy you feel towards them. They aren't responsible for your present circumstances, so stop blaming them. You have to take responsibility for your own situation. My guess is that they want you to be happy and that they're doing the best they can, so why not give them a break?

I can't tell you what to do with your life. I don't know what interests you or what talents or skills you possess. I can tell you that the longer you wait to take control of your life the more difficult it will be for you. Since you don't know what you want, or even what you're capable of, I think that you should focus on becoming independent of your parents. You say that you're afraid of being on your own and interacting with strangers. You are going to have to conquer this fear sooner or later, so there is no sense in waiting. You can't just sit around and wait for a lucky break to come your way or for inspiration to strike. I hate to break it to you, but that is not going to happen.

So get a job - any job - that will help you achieve independence. It may well be hard for you to find a job, but I'm sure you'll find something. Look around you - all sorts of idiots find jobs. If they can do it, so can you. Chances are you won't like your job - most people don't, but you'll be making money to pay your rent or saving money while living at home. Either way you'll be working for your independence and earning money until you figure out what to do with your life.

If you have a hard time finding work, find something to do with your time other than hanging around the house wallowing in hatred. Try doing something useful for others. You could volunteer to help the sick or the elderly, for instance. At least then you'll be working to overcome your difficulty in dealing with strangers without having to contend with the power dynamics in a workplace situation. Perhaps you can learn a few chords on the guitar, get an unusual haircut, wear shabby clothes and join a punk band. You can express your misanthropy that way and maybe someday someone will pay to listen to you. You've already got the attitude.
