John was the concept by which I measured my pain,
now who can I believe in?

I lost direction in my life when John Lennon, whom I patterned my life after, died. I've raised children in the meantime. Who should I mimic now?

Many people remember where they were and what they were doing when some significant historical event, for example the Kennedy assassination, took place. I remember where I was when I learned John Lennon had died. I liked his music, the values he espoused, and the way he used his celebrity to promote his beliefs rather than to simply gratify his ego and swell his bank account.

Those detractors who disagreed with his point of view always point out that he (like every other idol) had feet of clay. To me his personal failings were beside the point. He stood for something and he was consistent in his message and creative about the way he made it known. I don't idolize celebrities, but I do admire some of them and I admired John Lennon tremendously.

I am assuming that you didn't know John Lennon personally. If that's so, then you have patterned your life not after his life but after his public persona - the things he said and did before the eyes of the world. I am further assuming that you are not a famous rock star. If that is so, then you have used his beliefs rather than his accomplishments as a guide for your life.

Therefore, while the man himself has died, his beliefs - primarily the promotion of peace, but also of love - live on and are as valid as ever so there is no reason why you cannot continue to use those beliefs as a guide for your own life if you share them. His thoughts, his ideas, his beliefs (as well as his music) all survive the death of his body.

The embracing of these values existed before John Lennon's fame and plenty of people share them. If you share them too, it would be a fitting tribute to his memory if you were to go on promoting them as he did to the best of your ability. Work for peace. Fight for peace.

From what little you say about yourself it is clear that you have already surpassed at least one of John Lennon's accomplishments. You have raised at least two children. Our values live on in those we leave behind after we're gone. If you have instilled in them the values of peace and love that you hold dear, then you have done them and everyone they come in contact with a great service.

While John Lennon had a strong effect on the lives of countless strangers, he was at best a distant, ineffective father to his first child and through no fault of his own he died well before his second child reached maturity. Assuming that you were a successful parent to your children and that they turned out alright, I'd say you've done as much in your way to further the ideological legacy of John Lennon as anyone in your position could be expected to do.

Personally, I don't go in for celebrity worship. It's perfectly alright to isolate some aspect that you admire of a particular celebrity's life and incorporate that into your own worldview or use it as a guide for living your life, but I think a lot of people get carried away with this sort of thing. If you examine most organized religions you'll find that a large number of them are based on celebrity (whether real or fictional) worship.

Most of these religions espouse peace as a guiding principle, but that doesn't seem to stop their adherents from killing in the name of their God (or Gods, as the case may be) of peace. I think it's much better to know yourself and be true to yourself rather than to mimic the life of another (whether famous or not).

If what you're asking me to do is suggest another celebrity to model your life after, I'd be hard-pressed to come up with anyone of the caliber of John Lennon. I suppose [sigh] there's always Bono...
