生活にも事欠く収入しかない私は、
肩身を狭くして生きているのに、
なぜ、働く必要も無い大金持ちが、
いつも大きな態度をしているのですか？

Why do rich people
who don't need to work always act big,
while I barely earn enough to live on
and can't walk with my head held high？

これは複雑な質問だ。富の分配の不公平は、私有財産が生まれて以来、人類を悩ませている問題。金持ちは、自分が金持ちなのは一生懸命に働いた結果だとか、人並みはずれた能力を持っているからだと思っている。これは、言うまでも無く、全くのたわごとだ。工場の労働者は経営者より精出して働いている。それに、経営者にアドバイスをしている弁護士や投資銀行などのチームを従業員の方が持っていれば、彼らが工場を運営することもできるだろう。しかし、経営者は自分が従業員より賢くて勤勉であると信じがちだ。

Yours is a complicated question. The unequal distribution of wealth is a problem that has plagued mankind since the invention of private property. Wealthy people like to imagine that their wealth is a deserved result of hard work or a reward for their superior abilities. This is, of course, utter nonsense. A laborer in a factory works harder than the owner of that factory. Chances are the laborer could run the factory just as well as the owner if he were to have the same team of lawyers and investment bankers advising him. Still the owner likes to believe that he is wiser and more diligent than the laborer.

金持ちは大抵、家族以外とは資産を共有しないので、資産はそのまま代々引き継がれていく。金持ちの子どもはやっぱり金持ちで、生まれてから死ぬまでシコシコ毎日がんばって働く必要がない。彼らは彼ら以外の人々が住む世界の真実も知らなければならない、という義務があるわけでもないので、自分たちは特別に優秀な人間であることに疑いを持つことも無い。これが金持ちの態度が大きい理由だ。そして、取り立てて能力の無い金持ちが、強大な国のリーダーになってしまうということも時々ある。

Wealthy people generally do not choose to share their wealth with anyone outside their own family, so they pass the wealth on from one generation to the next. The sons and daughters of these families remain wealthy and do not need to do an honest day's work from birth to death. Because they have never had to involve themselves with the daily realities of most people, they come to believe themselves superior. This is why they act big. Sometimes they become leaders of powerful countries without having any ability whatsoever.

ところで、君があんまり金を稼げないのは、君が搾取されている労働者の一人だからだ。肩身が狭いと君が感じるのは、意識的にあるいは無意識に、金持ちが優れた人間だと君自身が信じているからだ。言い換えると、金持ちはその富に値する人間たちであり、君は搾取されるべくしてされている人間であると、君自身が思っているということだ。

この問題に簡単な答えはない。現状を変えるには、社会や経済のしくみを世界的に再編する必要がある。「社会主義」、「集産主義」など様々な試みが行われてきたが、小規模で限定的な成功しか生んでいない。全体的に見ると、主に人間の欲望とエゴゆえに、試みはいつも失敗に終わってきた。もし私がこの問題に対する答えを持っているならば、ここで人生相談をしてはいないだろう。人類の尊敬を一身に集めているか、暗殺されているはずだ。

ともかく、君が肩身を狭くしている理由はないわけだ。物事は実際には、あるべきようになってはいない、だから、状況を変える行動をしなければならないのだ、ということを知っておいてほしい。労働組合を組織せよ、労働組合に参加せよ、あるいは自分でビジネスを始めて、そこでは従業員をフェアに扱おう。人間の価値は、預金額とは何の関係もないのだ。

You barely earn enough to live on because you are one of the exploited laborers. You feel you can't walk with your head held high because, consciously or unconsciously, you believe that wealthy people are superior to you. In other words, you agree with the rich that they are deserving of wealth while you are deserving of exploitation.

There is no simple answer to this problem. To change the current state of affairs requires total realignment of global socio-economic systems. This has been tried through many means: collectivism, socialism, etc., but has only had limited success on a small scale. On a large scale it has always failed due mainly to human greed and egotism. If I had the answer to this problem I would not be writing an advice column. I would either be adored by mankind or assassinated.

However, there is no reason why you cannot walk with your head held high. You must understand that the way things are is not the way things have to be and take action to change your situation. Form or join a union. Start your own business and treat your employees fairly. A human being's value has no relationship to his bank account.
